Day 10 - Nutritionism

Pictured: Andrea started her day with some scrambled eggs, bell pepper turkey bacon, and a handful of almonds.

There is a paradigm that is pervasive in Western society regarding nutrition.  It is commonly assumed that since your body can't tell where nutrients (like fiber, Vitamin A, and potassium) come from, it doesn't matter from where you're getting them.

Take for example fiber, found in hearty doses of many fruits and vegetables.  Today, you'll see fiber soda, fiber water, fiber pills, and cereals with "added fiber".  Yes, it is fiber, but most often not the same type of nutrient that yields the same physiological benefits as that which you'd find in a nice helping of broccoli.

The point is, as much as scientists tinker with boxed food, adding more of the good and less of the bad, they'll never be able to generate the amount of positives in processed food as you'll find in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and meat.

Post food and thoughts to comments.

  3. Oh, and at Outback, I got my beef without the salt and seasoning, mixed veggies were not cooked in butter, and the sweet potato was plain. Lots of water.
